A few years back I was in Valencia doing what the professionals call ‘pre season testing’ but to the likes of me, it was the chance to ‘get some practice in’ before the start of the club racing season here in the UK.
While I was there a young Gino Rea was on track being fast and in the pits being friendly. A lad I thought was gonna go far.
Well he has, stayed with a great team for his World Supersport challenge in 2011.
Watch out Eugene, Biaggi, Leon, Marco et al as this boy will be in World Superbikes very soon!
Londoner Gino Rea will remain with his Intermoto Honda team for the 2011 World Supersport season but expects he can fight for the crown after scoring podiums last year.
Rea, who was 2009 European Superstock 600 Champion, will have the same team, bike and crew chief this year and says that fighting for top-threes straightaway is realistic.
“I really can’t wait for the 2011 World Supersport Championship to start, I’m glad that I finally signed for the Intermoto Czech team again. It means I’ll be continuing with the same team, same bike and same crew chief, Andrew Stone – so I’m expecting to bring the team some wins and podiums from the off,” said Rea.
“At the start of last year in Phillip Island, the bike was still being built so it was the first time I’d ridden it. Andrew and I worked well together and gradually developed the bike throughout the year. Now we know what we need from the bike, I know the championship and our potential is much higher already.
“There is still room for improvement in the bike, It was the teams first year with Motec Electronics so it took time to develop. Towards the end of the season we had them working well, but we need to continue improving to be at the front. It is a similar situation with the suspension.”
