Eugene Laverty: always a man with a plan

Laverty's double came after a titanic scrap with team-mate Melandri

Perhaps one of the level headed motorcycle racers of the moment. Fortunate that Biaggi was given a ride through in Race 2, and suprising that he actually came into the pits as his preference is to get black flagged (Donnigton in 2011 and most of his MotoGp career). Notwithstanding this, a great ride from Laverty as the level headed racer that he is. Not one but twice as he took the double win at Monza. As they say, never give up in any race irrespective of where you are in the field, as you never know what might happen ahead of you…as Max Biaggi proved yesterday.

Eugene Laverty in my opinion, has proved himself well at Monza, and for a young, physically fit guy, he looked like he had done a full day at the office by the end of Race two. From experience, Monza is not a hugely physical circuit as the long straights give you some rest. But the Ascari chicane is hard work getting a Superbike turning from one direction to the other.

Laverty’s double came after a titanic scrap with team-mate Melandri.

Factory Yamaha’s Eugene Laverty has said he was only looking to get a podium from today’s World Superbike double header at Monza but is ecstatic to come away with his first win in race one and then the double in the second outing.

The Toomebridge man cruised to his debut victory this morning after Max Biaggi got embroiled in a battle with Leon Haslam while race two saw him have to outfox team-mate Marco Melandri to take home more silverware.

“Race two was very hard work but I had it in my head what I was going to do. I was alongside Marco into the last corner so he would have had to have backed off had he not run wide so that was covered even though his bike was a bit quicker than mine.,” said Laverty, speaking to bikesportnews.com this afternoon.

“I got squeezed going into the first corner in both races, which I’m not very happy about because if I hadn’t backed off, there would have been the usual Monza accident but I was able to make my way back through. I only came here for a podium. Two wins in a day is awesome, I am ecstatic with how we have performed on our home ground.”
